| Convenient location, but be prepared...many many homeless and kinda crazy people call the surrounding neighborhood home. Union square is a short walk or bus ride away and there's a Starbucks in the lobby. We were disappointed the hotel doesnt have room service and at one point one 1 of 4 elevators worked. The hallways bare striking resemblance to the shinning...seriously. Overall though, not bad for the price. Room and bed were very nice. |

| It is an older hotel and we were excited to stay in a historic place. The hotel is in a bad neighborhood. The lobby is nice, very pretty. The rooms are in need of repair. Some of the calking of the tile was 3 inches wide to hold tile on, the tile did not match, the wallpaper is ripped in places. The carpet was stained even wet in places. Noisy from outside noise. Parking was outrageous. The hotel owns their own garage and charged $35 a day, that was more than we paid for the rental car. Free WiFi was nice. Staff were very nice. I could not recommend this hotel to friends. I wish I could. We were with another couple and they agree with the comments I made. I would give it a 2 start rating out of 5 stars. Stay somewhere else. |

| We are from the small mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona, so I wanted an impressive hotel for my daughters and I that we could afford. The Whitcome fit the bill. We really felt like we were some place special with the hotels elegance in old style decor. The restaurant in the hotel was beautiful with a cozy fireplace and gormet food. The concierge was particularly helpful. Even the securitiy, and bell hops had good recomendations for us. Our room was comfortable and quiet. Our theater, The Orphum, was acorss the street and the BART entrance right out the front door. We were advised to not walk around the area at night, so we took public transportation. Interesting shops or restaurants were not handy to this hotel by foot. |

| 1) Beautiful and historic
2) Beautiful lobby
3) Aging rooms; not immaculately cleaned; only about 30 cable stations available; interior rooms have a dismal view.
4) Convenient location for access to city sights
5) Nice restaurant and Starbucks adjacent to lobby
6) Seedy neighborhood
7) Great rate during Christmas holiday
8) Overnight parking rate seemed high to me
9) I requested my car 30 minutes prior to needing it (only 20 minute notice is required). When I arrived to pick it up, it wasn't available, and they weren't even working on getting it. However, they responded quickly when I stated that I had called 30 minutes before. |

| Stayed at Whitcomb in Dec. 2011 for five nights.. it's an alright hotel, but don't get too excited by the the look of the lobby; it probably was a grand hotel once, but not any more. The staff is friendly and the rooms are good, no noise from the street, very quiet, and the BART station is just outside the hotel (connection to airport and Caltrain). But the neighborhood is less attractive; would recommend hotels closer to the centre (further down Market st.) or in other neighborhoods e.g. North Beach, Russian Hills or Nob Hills. |

| From reading reviews of the hotel, I wasn't expecting much. But I decided to suck it up since it was close to the BART and I had an early morning airport departure. When I got there, though, I was pleasantly surprised: The lobby was grand and beautiful, and my room was clean and comfortable. It's an old hotel, built in 1916, with the pluses and minuses that entails. I love old hotels: The high ceilings, wide hallways, solid (and soundproof) construction, so it worked for me. The room was small, but I'm used to that in city hotels. The neighborhood was grungy, but so were other parts of SF that I saw. And the BART really was *right* outside the door. There was a Starbucks accessible from the lobby, no need to even go outside. I really glad I decided to disregard the reviews and stay there. It was beautiful. |

| The location of this Hotel is excellent. BART and MUNI are literally at the doorstep. However, the rooms are extremely small - doors do not seal very well, which means you can hear anything and everything being said in the hallways. The complementary "High Speed" wireless internet was slower than dial-up.
I would personally not stay at this Hotel again, although the location was excellent and everyone at the hotel was friendly. |

| Hotel advertises free wi-fi, however, the wi-fi while purporting to operate does NOT. I could not open the wi-fi in my room, nor in the lobby. The elecrical connections were okay for 1935, but not 2011. electical connections for power supply for a computer were not close to the small desk in the room, leaving the computer sitting on a chair so it could recharge. |

| Overall the rooms are nice, and being an old building, wall construction and ceiling height are much better than what you'd get in nearly any modern hotel in downtown SF. The maid service was excellent and the rooms were kept immaculate. Location is unbeatable, if you need immediate access to MUNI metro and BART.
However, there was never more than one person working front-of-desk during the 4 days I stayed there, and there was never not a line, even when I checked out at 4:55 AM. The attached internet cafe has overpriced nonfunctional computers. The hotel's provided "wifi" was literally the speed of a 56k modem from the early 90s - I never got more than 4k/sec download time.
I would recommend this hotel if you don't need internet, business center services, and aren't likely to ever be in a hurry (and want to spend 1-1.5hours in the front desk line). |

| This is the kind of place where you just crash over night because it's convenient. Its clean enough and the staff is great, but the hotel looks/feels more like a two star hotel - it needs to be remodeled in order to be a three star hotel. Also, not a hotel where you want to sleep in late. I woke up a couple of times in the morning - thinking there was an earthquake - as the room shakes when a nearby door slams. |
