Recent Whitcomb Historic America Review: "The staff at Hotel Whitcomb were friendly and very helpful. I felt like the room attendant in particular and the concierge took an interest in my family's welfare. The hotel was very clean, which helped me relax because I'm a bit of a clean-freak. The public areas of this historic hotel drew me to it from the website description (marble and Tiffany glass!) and I was not disappointed! There is even a little museum of hotel history on the mezzanine level. Public transportation was incredibly convenient from here with BART and MUNI right outside the front door. Union Square shopping was within walking distance or one stop away on BART. We even walked to and from Chinatown with our two children who are 8 and 12, although our feet got a bit tender at the end. The neighborhood has its good and bad. We enjoyed the farmer's market on Sunday that is just a block away at United Nations Plaza and the fenced-in, clean and functional playground across the street from the main library was a nice break for the kids. The walk between the hotel and Powell Street/Union Square passes some seedy businesses, but we distracted ourselves with the street cars passing and if we'd paid to ride the BART or MUNI underground we wouldn't have seen any of that."
