I wouldn't recommend the Spaulding for a vacation stay, but it was fine for a place to crash while we were in town for the Nike Women's Marathon. The hotel was just a couple of blocks from the start, which was great. Room was clean, although certainly bare bones. But again, for a convenient, one-night stay, it fit the bill.

I was slightly worried about my stay at the Spaulding, if only because it was one of the few hotels in the Moscone area that still had (very inexpensive!) vacancies during a convention. Having stayed for nearly a week and a half, though, I've decided it's going to be my new regular hotel every time I'm in the area. As someone embarrassed by 'luxury,' the Spaulding was exactly what I wanted it to be: a bed, a desk, a nice shower, and free wi-fi, a 5-10 minute walk from the convention center, and a comparatively very low price. Thanks for making my trip a wonderful stay!

Okay, this place is awesome. I read the reviews below, took them into consideration and started freaking out. I decided to read the reviews after I booked, smart move I know. So I went expecting the worst. Weird noises, odd smells, drunks, a lock that doesn't work and muggings in the street! Oh my I was going to get myself and my girlfriend killed all because I wanted a cheap rate! Not so. What I got was an in expensive rate that was within a walk or cheap cab ride anywhere in the city. The lock worked fine, the room was clean there was some street noise but its the city, its what we expected. After reading the reviews I called up and asked for "One of the renovated rooms" which was on the top floor. I didn't pay any extra money for this and our room was fine. The receptionist gave a very nonplussed "yeah...sure..." to this question and I doubted my request would be heeded. Apparently it was though, or if it wasn't I got lucky. The elevator is slow, but old and it has character. I escaped without any bedbug bites. There was a remote control for the TV.

The Spaulding Hotel is a great deal for the money you pay for it. It's a little deceiving walking into the lobby as it looks like a modern boutique hotel, but all the rooms are actually old converted apartments. The location couldn't be better, about a block from Union Square, and the staff was perfectly nice. Parking isn't included (but I think that's hard to find anywhere in San Francisco), however, the hotel pointed me to a parking garage one block from the hotel that was much cheaper (on O'Farrell St.). It's not a 24 hour garage, so you can't get your car for a few hours at night, but it ends up being MUCH cheaper that way. The room was clean and cozy. We had a great view of the street and the surrounding area was very lively and fun to be around. It's definitely not a 4-star hotel, but the converted apartment style gave it a nice homey feeling for a short adventure in the amazing city of San Francisco!

Basic hotel, close to the F line and Market street/Powel and the shopping area. Hotel has long term "residents" living there as well. The room was clean, convenient and easy check int. No frills and low price. Good place to crash if your not spending alot of time in the room. Reccomend for frugal, younger, laid back travelers who dont need alot.

Do not stay at this hotel if you are driving . $40 a day, which eats up the profits you pay for the hotel. The rooms are not bad if you like the creaky bed and the elevator that takes forever.

I read the other comments before I decided to go with Spaulding Hotel, and was a bit concerned. I took the risk, and I couldnt be happier when I arrived. All I needed was a shower and bed. I highly reccomend this hotel it is a very convenient location in the middle of downtown. Walking distance to cable cars. Its not how other people make it sound to be. I would definately stay there again.

...good location with other hotels...no parking was a drag...30 dollars for 24 hr parking....old building with old school windows and fire escape that could allow for someone to "sneak" to your window....nice asian man at front desk. cheaper than other hotels in vicinity....would stay again if wallet is tight or i need a room immediately to save cash...tight fitting room though..think motel 6 but smaller.

Be sure to put your jewelry and any other valuables away and out of sight! We had jewelry that was taken off a dresser as well as taken out of a jewelry box that was on top of clothes IN a bag The hotel will not be of any help if you're in this situation--we didn't even get an apology from the manager. Other than that you'll get only the bare necessities, which are OK. The neighborhood is a little noisy, but tolerable
