Recent Orchard Garden Hotel Review: "Given the bargain last-minute rate I got on this hotel, I was blown away by how nice it was. It's not a major city chain hotel - so no swimming pool and the "gym" is two small machines - but the quality of the room and the professionalism of the staff greatly exceeded my expectations. When I checked in, I was greeted in a truly personable manner (no stiff snooty hotel check-in - which was a nice, noticeable difference given I'd been living out of various hotels for the last 3 weeks for work)and that continued throughout my stay. Being a woman traveling alone, I found it reassuring that the front desk staff recognized me and greeted me individually each time I returned to the hotel. The room was great - plush bathrobes, turndown service with chocolates each night, very comfortable bed with good bedding, flat screen TV, clean/top quality beyond belief (felt brand new), and a soothing neutral palette. I had come to SF to "escape" and I spent a lot of time in the room just relaxing. The hotel is actually a "green" hotel - not something I would have scouted out as a priority, but I think it contributed greatly to the quality - no lingering smoke smells, quality sheets, etc - and I felt good about staying there. The hotel is in Union Square which is the best place to be if you are focused on shopping or for business in the financial district. I would have preferred to be in more of a neighborhood where people live (rather than work/shop), but there is endless public transportation within blocks of the hotel that made getting around easy. It's also right next door to Chinatown which is fun - and a reasonable walk to the Ferry Building where you can get the best fish tacos and jicama salad ever at Mijita, Ciao Bella ice cream and other fabulous treats. My only complaints - and they are minimal - the channels on the in-room TV are pretty limited unless you are big on ESPN/news channels and it's in a neighborhood with huge hills - you WILL get a workout exploring it/dragging"
