Recent Opal San Francisco Review: "We stayed in The Opal Wednesday and Thursday nights. The room was clean and roomie and even "nice." The hotel is old fashioned and homie feeling, but clean and very quite.
The location is excellent because you have two places to eat on the same corner, a privately owned cafe type place with a nice little bar and eatery, serving stuff like BBQ beef, turkey dinner, etc sliced right in front of you. Next to the hotel is a chain restaurant called "Mels." Also, you can catch the bus right out front, and the cable cars are only a couple blocks away, in a good part of town. On the map, The Opal looks like it's quite close tot eh Tenderloin District, but in reality, you are far enough away that you never see any of it (The Tenderloin District is what you want to avoid because of crime and violence. But it's VERY contained in several blocks each direction. You are at least three blocks from it's nearest point, which puts you very far out of the district.
The Opal is pretty much centrally located and equidistant from almost all of San Francisco.
It's a no frills type of place though. You get a continental breakfast and that's about it. It has a very small work out room with some light dumbells and aerobic equipment, such as bikes and treadmills. It's also a fairly quite location, and all rooms are off the ground floor.
I'm not sure how many parking places they have, but I know it's not nearly enough if everyone needed a parking space. You should call and ask them what happens if you can't get a spacer We had no problem, however.
They also have free high speed internet in the room, and a business type room where you can access the internet if you don't have a computer. I think that is free too.
It's a neat little place.
Staff was also very helpful and nice.
If I can, I'll book the Opal every time I'm in SF."

A five-tiered Peace Pagoda marks Japantown. Castro District, the city’s main gay neighborhood, is a short ride away, as is Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture bastion that is a gateway to Golden Gate Park.
