Recent Monarch Hotel Review: "I take ratings with a grain of salt and I am an experienced traveler so I am usually not surprised by much. I have to say that some of the reviews posted about this place must come from very picky and unreasonable travelers. The hotel is very centrally located with easy access to all forms of public transit including cable car stop a few blocks away  (buy a Muni Pass at the airport when you land it is the best value in town). The Tenderloin section of town does have it's fair share of street people but they are not agressive and just have to be taken as "local color". Really if you visit any large city you will get some of this unless you want to stay at the Fairmont or Mark Hopkins for triple what I paid per night. The hotel room was great- clean, no bugs, not noisy (we were on the top floor at the back so it was very quiet. The front desk staff were pleasant but really I did not have much need of their help. If you go to visit somewhere you really need to be able to find your own solutions to stuff- do reasearch online before you go and carry a smart phone. Other than that I have nothing bad to say for the price I paid for a three night stay in one of the most eclectic and fascinating cities in the world. Relax and have a good time and leave your picky attitudes at home and you will have plenty of fun. I would stay here again in a heartbeat."
