Recent Kabuki De Vivre Boutique Review: "The Kabuki is a fine hotel, but there are others just as nice in SF, or much nicer if you've got the big bucks. What's key about the Kabuki is that it's right in the Japan Center--anchors the east end of it, in fact. If you want to spend a significant amount of time at the center, as we did, the location is perfect. If you don't care at all about Japantown,  a hotel in another location would be more convenient. Some details: valet parking is now $35, not $40 as reported elsewhere, but it sells out very early. The garage is not "across the street," it's the Japan Center garage, which is large and runs under almost the whole center. There's a direct elevator from the garage into the hotel. Note that the shops in the center and Japantown generally aren't open long hours. Some open as late as 11 am and most close at 8 pm, except for bars and a few restaurants. Be aware of Safeway, one block south of Geary on Filmore (west end of the center). That's where you can get reasonably priced beverages and snacks (and even bento), and it's open early and late. That'll keep you from consuming the vastly overpriced supplies in your room. You have to get the key to the liquor fridge at the front desk, btw. The hotel is cool with you temporarily emptying out the contents so that you can store your own beer or soda. Avoid the hotel breakfast. It's also vastly overpriced and not very good. For dinner, there's a decent restaurant in the center right inside the closest door to the hotel. We had two rooms, one of which was on the fifth (top) floor of the garden wing. That room was much nicer than the regular room on the fourth floor. If you can get a fifth floor room you'll like it. If they don't put you there because they ran out of rooms elsewhere, though, I'm betting they'll charge more. In general, the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Just ask them whenever you have a question or problem."
