| I came to the city for a convention, which was a short walk from the Fitzgerald. I had read several reviews, so I knew what to expect. The building was built in 1910, so of course it has the low ceilings and small hallways, and tiny elevator where you pull the gate across. But of course the hotel has been fully refurbished, so it retains all the charm of Old San Fran, but all the comfort of modern day conveniences.
My single room was not much bigger than the double bed I had in it, just a path all the way around. But I expected a small room, so I wasn't surprised. It was perfectly clean, and beautifully decorated with great wooden furnishings, wall decorations, and accent lamps. The curtains matched the bedding, which had the softest and most comfortable bedspread I've ever slept on. It was a luxurious velvet and damask, with 2 bed pillows and 3 or 4 throw pillows which matched the velvet brocade. One of the accent pillows was almost as long as a body pillow. I have back problems, and so it was a great treat to sleep on it and use all the pillows and had a very comfortable night's sleep, without back soreness upon waking.
There was a brand new coffeemaker, microwave, and large dorm fridge. Most hotels have a coffee maker, but hotels 4 times the price will charge you extra for a fridge, and a microwave in room is unheard of anywhere.
The bathroom was tiny of course, but again very clean, had nice soaps and shampoos, and plenty of paper and towels. Shower only, but that was all I needed.
There was a new, approximately 15" flatscreen that slid out from the double doors in the cabinet. There were tons of channels and the remote and TV worked great. There was even a big, nice clock radio with a built in CD player. I've never had an in room CD player at any hotel I've been too. I regretted not bringing any CDs.
The complimentary continental breakfast was in the basement, but decorated into a cute cafe style, and it had a pc with a fee-based internet service. There was a n |

| As a San Franciscan living in exile, I often prefer to stay in small boutique hotels in the Union Square area when I return. I know to expect a small room in an older building with no air conditioning . . . it's downtown San Francisco, after all, not Duluth!
The Fitzgerald is one of the better ones I've stayed in. It is close to Union Square and the Theater District, a block north of Geary St. so there aren't as many street people around. The room was very small, even by S.F. standards, but clean and well maintained. The staff was extremely freindly and helpful. Overall, a great deal for the money. |

| It was very comfortable for just me and would have been fine for two as well. The staff were very polite and friendly. Super close to Union Square and bus and taxi service was right outside. There was a minor electrical issue when I got there and they had it resolved promptly. |

| Room was small but really couldn't complain for the price and location. It was clean, well kept and the staff was friendly. I would definitely stay there again. My one and only complaint was that the walls were thin and I could hear the elevator and people next to me. But it wasn't so bad as to wake me up or anything. It was a very good hotel. |

| It is cheap- that is true. The rooms are small but then so are most SF hotel rooms. This hotel is closer to a B&B, than a hotel. The rooms are ok. My issue was when at 5am I called the front desk to report the toilet overflowing and flooding the bathroom the front desk asked me to come and get a plunger.
I have been in a number of strange situations, but never a hotel that asked me to plunge my own toilet. My favorite was when the front desk person said in response to my preference that housekeeping plunge my toilet "well most guests just plunge the toilet themselves. It happens a lot." |

| I really liked this hotel, great location and very cute (but small) rooms. For the location and my stay there during a summer weekend the price was good. Decent breakfast, close to bart station and other transportation, friendly staff! |

| I had a room the first night on the 2nd floor -- #204, in fact. My bed was right next to the wall by the elevator. It sounded like a jackhammer battering the wall every time the elevator went up and down. Even with earplugs that was maddening. I had a really horrible night between that, the bar noise downstairs, and the clueless butthead loudly playing music in the room above me. They were booked and couldn't move me to another room.
After some wrangling with the guy at the front desk, I convinced him that the music was coming from upstairs, not on my floor. (Because, of course, he heard nothing on my floor, so there was obviously no problem.) That eventually got taken care of. But the hotel leaves the windows open out to the shared abysmal shaft (aka the "courtyard"), letting everyone enjoy the noisy bar who has a window sharing that shaft (er, I mean the "courtyard"). So they couldn't/wouldn't take care of that noise at all. It didn't calm down until almost 2:00am.
Did I mention that my room was extremely small? I didn't have enough room on the floor to walk *and* set down my suitcases. Also, my bed was almost too short for me (I'm 5'6"). So imagine lying on a wee small bed, feet sticking over the edge, wedging your head between two pillows as you curse humanity. Party!
All ended more or less well. I asked for a room move my second and final night. They put me up on the 5th floor in 503, across from the elevator. Not only did I get a slightly bigger room, but I actually got a hairdryer, an iron and ironing board, and a break from the bar noise. Oh -- and there's free, albeit wobbly, wifi on every floor but the 2nd. Nice, huh? The elevator racket is considerably less on the upper floors, too. So, I finally slept. |

| THE GOOD:
The hotel was clean. the gentleman at the check in desk was very nice, and helpful. the wine bar had weird hours but was impressed with the selection. Each room had a different decorative theme. The location was nice. bar across the street was pricey but fun. the location was good. everywhere we wanted to go was a cheap taxi ride away
THE BAD:
the room was the size of a closet. the elevator can barely hold two people and their luggage... when the elevator worked. they told us to call 20minutes in advance to pick up our car from valet, but when i was waiting to check out, the check out woman told us we had to move the car. The phone did not work in our room. the tv remote was broken. the a/c was broken and when we opened the windows for fresh air, we could hear street noise and people snoring. The worst part is after we booked the room online, we got an e-mail 2 days later that the hotel itself wanted an additional $500 deposit |

| If you want a unique hotel to stay in, located in the most unique city in the United States...this is the hotel for you. The room we had was small, yes. But it was the cutest room I had seen in the city thus far! The decor was beautiful!!! It had all the amenities you could want for the price; a fridge, a microwave, a coffeemaker, blowdryer, ironing board...oh, and a VERY comfortable bed! The towels...also VERY nice! Every corner of this renovated hotel is full of personality and charm. The wine bar was wonderful with GREAT staff! I HIGHLY recommend, just know the rooms are small, but these guys make that factor almost disappear! |
