If you like giving your money to real people and not corporate executives and shareholders, and you like staying in a hotel that is not in the Tenderloin AND not in a major tourist district, AND you don't have discriminating tastes in hotels, then the Edwardian is a great option. The staff were extremely friendly and non-typical hotel staff, which  made me feel welcomed and very comfortable. They are going for a boutique/European hotel feel, but have not quite arrived yet. They are in the middle of some (mostly superficial) renovations, the furniture was mismatched (queen-sized headboard with a full-sized bed. Oops!), and some of the decor is awkward. But if you are staying here, it is not for the decor. It is because you want a low-cost hotel where you will not get murdered in your sleep. You get what you pay for. The toilet seat was visibly dirty when we arrived, there was no cover on the soiled (but very nice!) duvet, the bed was full-size and not the queen-size bed we booked, and I was treated to the sounds of banda radio starting at 8am when the work crews started painting outside our room. This hotel was just my speed. Not a hostel, not a fancy hotel, but somewhere in-between. I would definitely stay here again.

Though the staff were nice and it had a quaint hostile feel, the rooms were NOTHING like the pictures (tiny, jammed with furniture) but we did get a great deal on the room. They were also undergoing a fair amount of maintenance that sort of changed the experience. Not what I was expecting but it was a place to sleep -- if you're looking for a nice  place to relax after a long day of exploring, I wouldn't go with the Edwardian.

The location is great for experiencing the city day and night. The rooms furnishings are tasteful with old world class.

Love the interior of this place. You feel like you are stepping back in time. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, but the inside is safe, and the staff is helpful!

The surrounding neighborhood is mixed, it seems that some gentrification is underway but there are a lot of homeless and drunks hanging around. My room was clean, but old and outdated (not in a charming way) - the bed was comfortable though. There were many tv stations but the overall green color of the screen was off putting. No A/C was a little uncomfortable  and with the window open the street noise was very loud. The bathroom was tacky and outdated and zero water pressure. I loved that it was very close to the Van Ness station and the F streetcar stops right in front, it was very easy to get around to/from the hotel. The staff were non-existent, I hardly ever saw somebody downstairs and had to drop my keys through a slot when I "checked out". No coffee in the room and the stale, cold stuff on the first floor was undrinkable. There is a note encouraging guests to make coffee, but there is no sink or water nearby!?! Crazy. Overall though, it was the location and price more than anything that made me want to stay here. I basically slept there and was gone all day and evening, so it worked out OK. There are so many other options in SF, I will probably not stay there again.

The Edwardian is conveniently located on the F streetcar line and right across the street from Caffe Trieste. Hayes Valley's hip shops and cafes are also near, as is Patricia's Green, where there's a gorgeous sculpture titled "Ecstasy."

I booked a room at the hotel because it was fairly inexpensive and close to where i needed to be. Upon arrival, the only thing that turned me off about the hotel was the parking but hey, I guess that's the downside of staying at a place off Market St. I really enjoyed the old traction elevator, In fact, it was my favorite part of the hotel. I also like  how the Edwardian uses actual keys and not key cards. My room wasn't at all spacious but was very decorative and it had a venetian feel to it from the wall paint and paintings to the curtains and bed covers. The place was, for the most part, very clean, something you wouldn't expect for a hotel that old. I was very pleased until I discovered that I had to pay extra for internet service! It turns out, all the rooms on the third and fourth floor cannot access the hotels wireless internet and have to pay an addition fee. luckily I was able to tether through my phone but was very turned off by the whole situation.... Overall, besides the customer service and front desk not answering the phone and the int issue, i would recommend this hotel. Specially if you're into Moorish architecture and 14th century type decor

We were travelling back to our home after living in the US for a year, so had lots of luggage - not the best hotel in these circumstances. The rooms are tiny and there simply wasn't enough room for our bags - there's also very limited space in the hotel generally for storage or moving around. That said, it's a lovely, friendly place on the edge of the  downtown area. The area of the hotel itself is a bit seedy, and off-putting at first, but is actually safe and friendly when you look closer.

This place is small, old, and cute. My biggest problems were that free wi-fi was advertised online, but actually cost $3.99 per hour and it cost $15 to park in the hotel parking lot.
