Recent Villa Florence Review: "I travel to San Francisco every few months, and I struggle to find a hotel that feels safe and comfortable, plus is close to Union Square. Well, you can't get much closer. We're talking just up the street. The remodeling is almost complete, and we had no trouble with the last details -- the only problem was one elevator being worked on. The room was European tiny, but had a comfortable bed, a tiny but sparkling bathroom, tables for TV and your computer, and the friendliest staff I've found in several years of heading to SF Union Square. Alex and Clarence on the front door were wonderful and appreciated, whether moving bags and giving explicit instructions where the fire exit was, or recommending great places to eat that didn't blow the budget. Even the newest staff member could pull up specifics on local information, and knew who to grab for more esoteric details. There was a window air conditioner we didn't try, because the weather was wonderfully cool. Our view was only a utility courtyard, but it was quiet and as it was 4th floor, felt safe. There's free wireless (you will pay a pretty penny for it at some of the nicer hotels). Downstairs is a lovely Italian restaurant, and the bar and snack area was comfortable plus the view of people passing on the street excellent. The cable cars were simple to catch. Only one caveat -- the shower stall was very tiny, a glass triangle that worked fine for us -- but someone who was *very* heavy might not be able to shut the door. So if that matters, ask them if they have a room with a larger shower. And remember that hotel parking prices are crazy in SF -- although their parking charge was better than several other hotels I've stayed in. The combination of all these details plus the Hotels.com price meant Villa Florence has moved to the top of my SF travel list. My only fear is that they'll price themselves out of my range. I'll always try them first from now on."
